Be Aware - Here are some tips!

In recent years the internet has changed the way that many businesses run beyond recognition. This has been very positive for the talent industry in a multitude of ways. Potential talents now have the opportunity to share online portfolios and search for potential work via reputable agencies and clients are able to put in talent requests - and make selections - all on the same day.

However, there are of course negatives to consider as well. While the internet has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for both talent and client, it is important to remember that such a huge resource is also very difficult to regulate. This difficulty in regulation has led, amongst other things, to a large rise in scam agencies that prey specifically on would-be talents and other talented people.

Thankfully, people are becoming far more internet savvy in response, and vulnerable parties are beginning to protect themselves better - taking time to research companies before taking up representation and, as a result, managing to steer clear of those who are simply there to take advantage.

This increase in public awareness is good for the industry and Buzz Talent Management are glad to see that people are now far more aware of what to look out for. However, there is still some confusion regarding the difference between a legitimate agency and a scam agency - which has led to some misdirected negativity being aimed at long-standing, creditable talent and modelling agencies.

In this Industry Advice section we hope to explain the difference between scam agencies and reputable agencies. We pride ourselves on having a consistent and professional approach and our goal is to advise those who are thinking about a career in talent, helping them to make an informed choice.

We address many concerns in our Frequently Asked Questions section on the website but the Q&A section below also highlights ways in which you can identify and protect yourself from a scam agency:

How do I improve my chances of finding work?

Persistence and proactivity are key - stay engaged and look out for opportunities. Ensure your photos and online profile are current and fully updated with your latest details, skills, and experience. Reach out to local businesses, upcoming events, and media that may require talent. Provide Buzz Talent's contact details to potential clients so they can represent you.

How do I update my profile?

Update your profile regularly to keep it accurate and up-to-date for clients. Change your photos only when your look changes significantly. Contact info@buzztalent.co.uk if you need guidance on updating your profile photos. The key is to stay proactive, responsive, and maintain an accurate, detailed profile with Buzz Talent. Let us know if you have any other questions!

What if I'm too busy, or don't want to do an assignment?

If you have work, educational, domestic or personal commitments that mean you can't accept an assignment, or if you simply don't want to do it, we'll offer the assignment to the client's second choice. Please do not accept an assignment if you cannot fulfil it. If this happens regularly, you may be removed from our talent roster. Once you have accepted an assignment from us and agreed to all the terms and conditions, including your fee and expenses, you have made a commitment to completing that assignment.

Once you have accepted an assignment from us and agreed to all the terms and conditions, including your fee and expenses, you have made a commitment to completing that assignment.

How much can I earn?

Fees can range from £50 to several hundred pounds per day, depending on the type of work, your experience, how many agencies you are registered with, and your own initiative and persistence.

We agree the fee with you before you accept an assignment. After the assignment, we collect the fee from our client (see our terms and conditions) and keep it in our client account. We retain our agency fee of 25% and send the rest to you.

Does my child need a Child Performer's Licence?

A Child Performer's Licence is required for all children of compulsory school age. If your child is selected and booked for an assignment, we will send you the booking forms and a Child Performer's Licence application. We will complete as much of the licence as possible, and you will need to fill in the rest, sign it, and take it to your local authority for their signature and approval. The local authority will then issue the licence directly to you.

Note that there are regional differences in how local authorities handle Child Performer's Licences, so contact your local authority for advice.

When and how do I get paid for assignments?

We pay you when we receive the funds from the client. Payment runs are done on the 1st and 15th of the month, and the payments are sent to the bank account you have nominated.

Are my travel costs paid?

If the assignment is more than around 20 miles (32km) from your home, we will endeavour to secure an additional fee for travel with you. Travel fees are paid at the same time as your assignment fee and are agreed with the client. Sometimes, this is included in the fee offered and decided by the client offering work.

You must discuss and agree any travel fees before the assignment is confirmed. You cannot negotiate them retrospectively, after the assignment.

What is a chaperone fee?

A chaperone fee is agreed before an assignment and paid, in addition to the booking fee, for one parent or guardian to accompany a child/teenager on an assignment. The chaperone fee helps with your costs for being on hand during the assignment. The amount paid depends on the value of the assignment, location, time, and travel costs.

You must discuss and agree any chaperone fees before the assignment is confirmed. You cannot negotiate them retrospectively, after the assignment.

I have just completed an assignment. What should I do?

Email us with feedback, and tag us on social media (where permitted) to let us know how you got on. We like to showcase our talent's achievements, so we will post about your successes on our social channels!

Why is it that people who are interested in talent are more susceptible to being scammed?

People are vulnerable to being scammed in this industry as it is largely unregulated, which can be confusing. This can lead to some agencies taking advantage of people that are unaware of this when looking for talent and modelling work.

What sort of claims do these scam talent agencies make?

More often than not they will claim that you have to pay for them to take professional photographs of you, or state that you must pay and attend one of their TEST SHOOTS . However, in reality the photos are often of poor quality and unnecessary as they can quickly become out of date. Talent agencies CAN NEVER guarantee you work.

Will I be guaranteed work?

Many of these scam talent agencies deceive people by guaranteeing that they will get you work. However, the talent industry is very competitive, and it is the client that makes the final decision for booking. You should always be wary of any company guaranteeing anything in this industry. They are usually lying so you will give them small, or often large, sums of money for nothing in return. If they do Guarantee work – run a mile ! Testimonials

We do not guarantee that we will be able to find work for our talents as the industry is very competitive. However, we do have a consistent flow of companies asking to book our talents and they are put forward for work whenever they match the client's criteria.

If in doubt reach out to us at info@buzztalent.co.uk.

What kind of services do reputable talent agencies provide?

Legitimate talent agencies should provide a range of services to support and represent their talents, such as:

  • Evaluating and developing your skills
  • Providing professional headshots and photography services at reasonable rates
  • Submitting you for relevant casting opportunities that match your profile
  • Negotiating fair rates and contracts with clients on your behalf
  • Offering career guidance and industry advice
  • Handling bookings, payments, and tax/legal matters professionally
  • Providing access to their industry network and connections

How do I research a talent agency before signing with them?

When evaluating a talent agency, be sure to:

  • Check their website and online presence thoroughly and active social media is always a good indicator
  • Read reviews from current and former represented talents
  • Verify their business registration and licensing
  • Ask for a list of past clients and projects they've worked on
  • Inquire about their commission rates and any upfront fees
  • Ensure they are easily contactable during office hours
